Thursday was the first day of school for members of the community at a special institute opened for the transgender community in Pakistan’s Multan. Around 18 transgenders have enrolled in the school. Punjab’s Secretary School South Punjab Ehtisham Anwar inaugurated the Government Comprehensive School for Girls on Wednesday. Inaugurating the school, Anwar said that schools for trans community would be started in Dera Ghazi Khan and Bahawalpur also.
The school in Multan offers classes from Nursery to Intermediate and specifically caters to the educational needs of the transgender community. Officials have said that the syllabus from nursery to primary has been developed in Japan, while the curriculum taught from middle school to intermediate will be based on Pakistani education boards.

Transgender Alisha Sherazi, who has done her MPhil in International Planning and Management from Bahauddin Zakaria University, is the teacher of this school. Speaking to Pakistani media Geo News, Sheraji said that the students attending the schools are being taught everything that their counterparts are taught in other schools.
He said that this is a very big day in the history of him and Pakistan. Another teacher who graduated in psychology said that we can understand them because we are from their community. We can teach them better than normal people. He thanked the government for giving transgenders an opportunity to teach in school.

Now all dreams will come true
Transgenders from the community who got the opportunity to teach in the school were already feeling special but for the 18 students who have enrolled in the school, it is like a ‘dream come true’. Talking to the media, a student said, ‘I think from now on all my dreams will come true.’ Another student said, ‘By studying, we will help our family and community.’ Punjab Education Minister Murad Ras has lauded the team that launched the school.
