Steven Davies was asleep in his floor ground flat when the fireplace that killed two youngsters took maintain on the ground above.
“I just woke up and the house was on fire,” he says.
“I saw the fire brigade drag out the little kids, I knew they were gone because the smoke was horrendous coming out… they had no chance.”
Two women, aged one and three, have been pronounced lifeless shortly after the fireplace broke out on the flat within the Clifton space of Nottingham simply after 3am on Sunday.
A girl in her 30s, understood to be the women’ mom, is in a important situation in hospital.
Police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of homicide. He stays in custody.
Mr Davies did not know his neighbours by identify however says they’d lived within the flat above him for so long as he is lived there.
“She was a lovely lady, she was really kind,” he says.
“It’s devastating as a result of clearly it is two little youngsters.
“I don’t really know the children, I used to see them in the backyard. They were lovely.”
“She was only there for emergency housing until the council sorted her out.”
Whole group subdued
Among individuals laying flowers outdoors the flat was Reverend Lydia Carter.
“It’s really shocking. I think there’s just a sense of disbelief. The whole community seems subdued this morning that something like this can happen so close to home,” she says.
She provides that the native church might be open all week for individuals to mild candles.
Local police are finishing up additional “reassurance patrols” for the group following the tragedy.
