In view of the scarcity of water in Pakistan, experts have warned that a famine-like situation may arise if this problem is not resolved in time. Pakistani media Geo News gave this information on Sunday. According to the report, the drying up of rivers due to less rainfall is being considered as a danger bell, due to which there has been a water shortage across the country.
It has been said in the report that India is also stopping the water flowing to Pakistan, due to which the situation has become worse than before. According to sources, the per capita water availability in the country is 1,100 million cubic meters per year, which is alarmingly low, whereas in Punjab, the groundwater has to go to a depth of 600 feet, which used to be found below 50 feet earlier.
Expert said – famine is sure to happen
According to the report, every year, Kharif and Rabi crops face water shortage of up to 45%. Groundwater levels have started depleting in small and big cities across Punjab, including Lahore. Water experts have warned that Pakistan will face a famine-like situation if new reservoirs are not built and water wastage is not stopped.
According to water experts, due to increasing population, water loss and climate change, the authorities will have to take immediate precautions, otherwise there is bound to be a famine. Amjad Saeed, president of the Pakistan Engineering Congress, said that the water problem may become more serious in the coming days. He said that apart from the water dispute with India, the provinces of Pakistan are also fighting among themselves over the sharing of water.
Water level going down one meter every year
Sayeed said about 7 million acre feet of fresh water is lost to the sea every year. Throwing light on the matter, Zahid Aziz, Managing Director of Water and Sanitation Agency (VASA), Lahore, said that for the last 15 to 20 years, the groundwater level of Lahore city is going down by one meter every year. He said this was due to the lack of rain, the condition of the Ravi river and wastage of water by the citizens.
However, he said that due to government measures, the groundwater level has increased by two meters, which is enough for major cities including Lahore for many years to come. He said that presently people in Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi and most of the cities of South Punjab are facing shortage of fresh water but projects are being made to deal with it.
