Ethiopia Elections 2021: Ethiopia’s ruling party has won the majority of seats in the national election. After which Abi Ahmet will remain in power for five more years.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s victory in Ethiopian elections
Ethiopia Elections: Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party has won a historic victory in last month’s national elections. This has been announced on Saturday (Ethiopia Election Results). After which Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s stay in power for five more years has become certain. Ethiopia’s national election board said the ruling party won 410 of the 436 seats in the federal parliament. Several other seats remained vacant due to non-polling in constituencies due to unrest or logistical reasons.
Ethiopia’s new government could be formed in October. The elections were a major test for Abiy, who came to power in 2018 when the former prime minister resigned amid widespread protests (Ethiopia Elections 2021). Abiy’s regime saw several political reforms and won him the Nobel Peace Prize, but critics say he is withdrawing from political and media freedom. Abiy was criticized internationally for his handling of the conflict in the Tigre region.
Voting not done in Tigre
Polling in June was postponed twice earlier due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and logistical problems. The elections were largely peaceful but opposition parties alleged harassment and intimidation. Voting was not held in Tigre region (Ethiopia Elections Delay). The impact of conflict in the Tigre region has become one of the main reasons for the displacement of refugees in 2020. There has been an annual increase in the number of forced displaced persons for the ninth year in a row.
The army attacked the village
Last month there were airstrikes on a crowded market in a village in Tigre. In which more than 80 people were reported to have died. Surprisingly, these air strikes were done by the country’s army itself. The medical team was prevented from going to the site of the attack, which led to the death of many more people (Ethiopia Togoga Tigray Bombing by Air Force). However, the army did not say anything about why this attack was done.
