The court’s move appears to be part of a campaign to undermine President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent opposition leader ahead of parliamentary elections.
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny
The troubles of the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny are not taking the name of lessening. A Russian court on Wednesday declared the organizations founded by Navalny outlawed, terming them extremist. The court decided to disband an anti-corruption organization FBK and ‘Citizen Rights Protection Foundation’. According to the Sputnik report, it also banned Navalny’s activities after declaring his campaign offices as extremists.
The court said, the decision taken regarding the termination of the activities of these organizations comes into force with immediate effect. The move appears to be part of a campaign to undermine President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent opposition leader ahead of parliamentary elections. Yevgeny Smirnov, a lawyer for Navalny, said during the hearing that prosecutors’ proposals to ban the organizations showed they wanted to prevent the opposition leader from running for public office. Smirnov said, the matter has been linked to the law that bans all people associated with the Foundation for Fighting Corruption from being elected.
Navalani is serving a sentence in jail
Navalny, considered a staunch critic of Vladimir Putin, was arrested in January on his return from Germany. Navalani, who fell ill after being given a nerve agent, was undergoing treatment in Germany for five months. Navalny accused the Kremlin of giving nerve agents. However, Russian officials rejected the allegation. On the other hand, when he reached Moscow, he was arrested. Currently, Navalani is serving a sentence in jail in a fraud case. He was sentenced to 3.5 years, which was reduced to 2.5 years.
