Laborers Stranded in Tunnel in China
On Thursday, three laborers died after flooding and submerging an under-construction tunnel in Zhuhai city, south of China, whose bodies have been recovered while 11 workers are still trapped. These workers also worked to extract water in the Shijingshan tunnel. The tunnel was being built under the reservoir, which is part of a highway in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province.
This place is close to Hong Kong and Macau. Evacuation of the trapped laborers is going on and rescue operations are being carried out with the help of divers and robots. However, the fumes of carbon monoxide from the equipment used in the tunnel operation is hampering the rescue work.
Rescue work going on with the help of divers
The reasons for the accident are not yet known. Some reports said unusual sounds were heard before the accident and debris started falling from a section of the two-tube based tunnel. As soon as the water entered the tunnel, an order was issued to evacuate it. It is believed that there was a security related problem in the construction of this tunnel.
The news came on Sunday that now the help of divers will be taken in the rescue work of the workers. Zhuhai City Deputy Mayor Zhang Yisheng told a news conference that the water level in the tunnel had receded, according to a news report by state broadcaster ‘CCTV’. Zhang told that the help of underwater robots, unmanned boats and sonar detectors will be taken to find the people trapped in the tunnel.
Two laborers died in March
In March this year too, two laborers were killed in an accident on the other side of the tunnel. According to media reports, the incident of March was caused by the collapse of the wall. Stones fell on the workers, due to which they died. Zhuhai is a coastal city located in Guangdong Province and is located near Macau at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta. When the ruling Communist Party began efforts to boost the country’s economy nearly 40 years ago, this place was one of China’s earliest special economic zones.
