China has asked people living in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, to prohibit certain religious practices during their holy month ‘Saga Dawa’. Taking this step of Beijing, it is believed that once again it is crushing religious freedom in this area with Buddhist population. According to the Fire News portal, this order has been issued through a circular.
According to the news portal, this circular was sent to the Buddhist Sangha of Lhasa city on 9 May, which informed the people about it. It was sent at a time when the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar began on Wednesday. This month is considered very sacred by Buddhists. China took this order and said that it has been done to prevent the corona from spreading. But human rights groups ‘International Campaign of Tibet’ (ICT) say that its real purpose is to further restrict the religious freedom of Tibetans.
China is using Corona as a weapon
The US-based ICT said that it is necessary to take necessary steps in view of the corona, as it has caused trouble all over the world. But the Chinese authorities present in Lhasa are using the corona as a weapon to stop the religious practice of Tibetan Buddhists in this holy month. The constitution of the People’s Republic of China refers to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This constitution states that there is religious freedom in the country. But it is also written in this that it limits general religious activities with regard to security.
It took to crush religious practices by citing national security
The International Religious Freedom report released by the US State Department stated that the CCP rules only allow Chinese citizens to participate in officially accepted religious practices. It says that religious activities have been determined in such a way that they do not harm national security. The report stated that the CCP rule governs all aspects of Tibetan Buddhism, including religious sites, groups, staff and schools.
