Rat poison has been found in an estimated 80 percent body of American eagles. It has been reported in a new study of the University of Georgia. Scientists examined dead bodies of dead golden and bald eagles between 2014 and 2018. He found that most of these hawks contained rat poison in the body. Rat poisoning was found in 96 out of 116 Bald Eagles and 13 out of 17 Golden Eagles.
The poison found in the body of the eagles has been identified as ‘anticoagulant rodenticide’. Mice are the staple food of American eagles. In such a situation, scientists believe that the mice must have been poisoned and then eaten by eagles. In this way, the poison must have reached the bodies of the eagles through the mice. According to Cornell University’s Wildlife Health Lab, blood thinners ‘anticoagulant rodenticide’ work together with vitamins. Due to these two, there is blood clotting in the body.
Poison can remain in the bodies of eagles for a long time
Scientists said that if it is consumed in large quantities then it starts bleeding internally or externally. In some cases, death also occurs. Professor Mark Rudder told that the poison of the rat can remain in the body of the bird for years. However, Rudder said that it is not yet completely clear how this poison has reached. Due to the methods of hunting the eagles, there is a greater possibility of them becoming a victim of poison. He said that people should also think about these hawks before poisoning the mice.
Number of hawks is more than three lakhs
In America, the population of eagles has increased due to a decrease in the use of eagle hunting and pesticide chemicals. Things became so bad in the 60s that they had to be included in the list of endangered birds. Then attention was paid in this direction and between 2009 and 2019 there was a quadruple increase in the population of hawks. Now their number is more than three lakhs and they have been excluded from the list of endangered birds.
