India wants to buy the S-400 Missile System from Russia in view of the ever-increasing threat along the border. But with this multi-billion dollar deal, America’s perceived enemies of Russia have climbed. He has even threatened to ban India. But now a US lawmaker has warned President Joe Biden Administration that doing so would prove to be a big mistake.
US lawmaker and Republican leader Todd Young has said that banning India under the ‘Countering America Advertisers Through Sanctions Act’ (CAATSA) would be a victory for Russia in a way. Young, a member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote in ‘Foreign Policy’ magazine that if US President Joe Biden’s administration imposes sanctions on India, it will weaken the strategic front in the critical period. By doing this, America’s relations with India will be weakened. Also, the ‘quad’ ability to deal with China will also be affected.
Russia will take advantage of the move against India
Young said on Monday that Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, had said in recent weeks that India should be warned of a ban under Section 231 of the CAATSA if India moves towards buying a Russian missile system. needed. Section 231 is applied to establishments working for or on behalf of the Russian defense or intelligence sectors. Young wrote in the magazine, ‘This step will not prevent India from buying the S-400 (missile) system. In view of India’s historical skepticism about international cooperation and its longstanding relationship with Russia, they will exaggerate and take advantage of them in India, including allies of the Non-Aligned Movement. They remain skeptical about deep relations with the West.
CAATSA should be exempt
He wrote, ‘In addition, Russia can take advantage of the sanctions to reclaim its role as India’s military partner. After this, the irony will be that banning India with Russia-made defense system will actually prove Moscow’s geopolitical victory. He appealed to the Biden administration to exempt India from CAATSA, saying, “By giving this exemption and allowing India to buy Russian weapons, the Biden administration can make it clear that the main geopolitical threat to the US is China.”
