Four people have been arrested on charges of possessing two and a half kilograms of unrefined uranium in Nepal capital Kathmandu. One of the arrested people claimed that his father-in-law had ‘brought’ it from India when he worked in a uranium mine there. Police gave this information.
According to Senior Superintendent Sushil Singh Rathore, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police Office, Ranipokhari, the arrest was made on a secret information. Officials told the press conference that on confidential information, a house was raided in the Boudh area and 2.5 kg of uranium-238 was found from four people.
First arrest for ‘uranium smuggling’
He told that this is probably the first time when arrests have been made in connection with uranium smuggling. He said that there is no such technology center or agency in Nepal where this metal can be used. Out of those arrested, two people are 20 years old and two are 40 years old. Officials said that the first intelligence was that some people are trying to blacken uranium. He said that after this investigation was done. ‘Father-in-law brought from India two decades ago’
Senior Superintendent Ashok Singh, head of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range, said that one of the arrested men said that his father-in-law worked in a uranium mine in India nearly two decades ago. This person had brought some uranium and kept it in his house.
The Kathmandu Post quoted him as saying in his news that his father-in-law is now 86 years old and he currently lives in the US. Explain that uranium-238 is a naturally occurring metal. It can be used to make electricity and nuclear weapons.
