The case of George Floyd’s death.
A retired forensic doctor testified Wednesday on behalf of the defense in the ongoing murder trial of former officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. The doctor said that George Floyd died of heart disease while being controlled by the police, while many experts said that Floyd died due to lack of oxygen.
Dr. David Fowler, a former chief medical examiner in the state of Maryland and now a member of a consulting firm, said Floyd found fentanyl and methamphetamine in the body and that his heart disease included high blood pressure and narrowing of the arteries. He said on the second day of defense testimony that all these things were caused by Floyd’s death. Chauvin’s attorney Eric Nelson is trying to prove that a Minneapolis police officer did what he was trained to do. Also Floyd died due to his illicit drug use and underlying health problems.
Controversy over shooting another black
On the other hand, a white police officer who shot a black man during a traffic stop in Minneapolis, US, resigned on Tuesday. With this, the city police chief also resigned. The mayor has said that he hopes these steps will comfort the black community and pave the way for reconciliation after two nights of protests.
But on Tuesday night, hundreds of protesters regrouped at the Brooklyn Center’s police headquarters, where police and National Guard soldiers were stationed to deal with something untoward. Concrete blockers and metal fencing have now been installed at the headquarters. The protesters inscribed “Murdarapolis” with black paint on a blocker and raised slogans. The incident occurred in the Minneapolis area where there is already a lot of tension over the ongoing trial of the officer accused in the death of George Floyd.
