A Russian court ordered a ban on the activities of a foundation set up by jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny on Tuesday. The court, however, suspended the verdict on whether the ‘Navalni Foundation for Fighting Corruption’ was an illegal or extremist group. The decision of the Moscow City Court has come at a time when widespread action is going on against the arch-critic of Navalny, the arch-critic of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, and his political structure.
The prosecution office has urged the court to declare Navalni’s foundation and network of regional offices as extremist groups and keep the members in jail for a long time. If the court accepts this request, it will be a great blow to Navalani and her supporters. Navalani has been in a prison outside the capital Moscow since January. Many of his supporters from across the country have also been arrested.
Ban on participation in elections and use of bank deposits
Lawyer Ivan Powalov, representing Navalni’s Foundation, said that the organization has been prohibited from using the media and the Internet to organize rallies. There has also been a ban on participation in elections and the use of bank deposits. Foundation director Ivan Zhaidanov said that its work will not be affected by the ban on the foundation. He argued that most of the restrictions do not apply to the activities of anti-corruption organizations.
