New Zealand earthquake: An earthquake of seven.1 magnitude struck the Kermadec Islands area in New Zealand on Thursday, stated the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) USGS added. The US Tsunami Warning System stated a tsunami warning was issued after the quake for close by uninhabited islands in a 300-km radius.
There is not any tsunami menace to Australia, the nation’s Bureau of Meteorology stated.
Reports within the New Zealand media recommend issuance of related rescue measures within the area.
Kermadec Islands vulnerable to earthquakes
The Kermadec Islands lie northeast of the New Zealand capital and measure about 13 sq. miles. The volcanic island is continuously shaken by tremors, in response to The Mirror.
New Zealand is vulnerable to earthquakes as it’s situated on the boundary of two of the world’s main tectonic plates- the Pacific Plate and the Australian Plate.
The quake rocked the Kermadec Islands area which lies north of the nation within the early hours of Thursday. The quake was estimated at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles) USGS added.
However, the National Emergency Management Agency stated there was no tsunami menace for New Zealand.
