The ruling Communist Party of China will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding on July 1. On this occasion, President Xi Jinping and the party have called on their members and the country to remember the early days of the struggle. Mao Zedong, the former President of the People’s Republic of China, established himself as the leader of the party in the 1930s.
The Communist Party of China (CCP) was founded in 1921. The CCP organized its first congress in Shanghai with the help of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. It was organized at such a difficult time, when 2000 years of dynastic rule came to an end in the country just a decade ago. Mao Zedong was the representative of Hunan province in the initial Congress. He later became the commander of the Red Army in 1935 and then the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Who are the members of CCP?
The rank of the Communist Party of China has increased in the same way as the population of the country. As of this month, the CCP has 95 million members, which is 6.7 percent of China’s population. Its members are ordinary citizens. Initially established as a party for farmers and workers, the CCP has become increasingly diverse. In 1982, it focused on recruiting university students and in 2002 began welcoming private entrepreneurs. The party is currently dominated by men, with women constituting only 28.8 percent of its members. At the same time, all seven members of the top leadership of the party are men.
CCP includes members of ethnic minority communities
Members of the Communist Party constitute 7.5 percent of the ethnic minority community, which is slightly less than their share of the population of China. Party members are required to be secular atheists. Members have to renounce all religions, including Buddhism and Taoism, which have existed in Chinese society for centuries.
How does one join the party?
Chinese youth and students with good grades and behavior are selected by teachers to join the Young Pioneers. These students have to wear red dupatta around their neck to differentiate them from the rest. These students involved in CCP are given roles to manage other students. The same process is repeated in high school, where good students join the youth league, the teen wing of the party. The process of applying to join the party usually starts from the university itself. This process lasts for two to three years. There are many faces in this process, only after which people are sworn to join the party.
