Chipset has become a global problem, increasing its shortage due to supply demand mismatch with silicon wafers. This has an impact on the supply of routers.
Router Shortage
Broadband providers are experiencing delays of more than a year by ordering Internet routers. The reason for this is the lack of chip which is affecting the global supply chain. Because of this, those working from home are getting difficult. According to people familiar with the matter, people have been given more than 60 weeks for delivery, which is twice the previous wait time.
The demand for domestic broadband devices has increased due to the lockdown caused by the coronavirus virus a year ago, said Carsten Gavke, head of European regional business for Taiwan-based router maker Zyxel Communications Corp. He said, since January, the company had asked customers to order products in advance a year ago as the lead time for components such as chips from Broadcom Inc. has doubled since then.
Zyxel is a main supplier of routers, including Telenor ASA in Norway and Jane Internet customers in the UK. Adrran, a US network equipment maker picking up market share from China’s Huawei Technologies in Europe, has also warned customers of supply chain risk and lead-time extensions in recent months. A spokesperson said via email that Adrran has expanded its warehouse facilities in the UK to double its inventory and logistics capacity to avoid problems.
Shortages of routers can happen in 6 months
At present, no carrier has reached the shortage of the router completely yet, but the supply chain is going to remain the same for the next six months. According to Gwek, the problem of shortage can also be revealed soon. Even pre-determined shipments cannot avoid the obstacles coming in the global business.
However, Broadcom did not immediately respond to this comment. On the other hand, Zyxel CEO Hawk Tan said last month that 90 percent of the 2021 supply has already been ordered.
Global problem of chipset
Zyxel’s problems started a year ago when its Wuxi, Chinese factory was shut down for a month due to the Covid-19. Since it has been reopened, supply has decreased and shipping costs have lost as much as 10 times their previous levels as exporters are required to have outbound medical and personal safety equipment. As Chinese factories have resumed, chipsets have become a global problem, with silage wafers as well as supply demand mismatch causing its shortage. Some carriers have also stockpiled to avoid shortages.
