The shift of the Apple supply chain to India, in line with the incentives provided by the government, has so far created around 20,000 jobs in the country. According to a report by Digi Times Asia, this number could have been higher if the COVID-19 epidemic had not come.
Manufacturers including Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron were committed to creating a certain number of job opportunities when applying to enter the subsidy program under India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI).
According to the report, if Foxconn and Wistron successfully fulfill their hiring plans as promised in their PLI application, they will add 23,000 people to their Indian operations by the end of March 2022.
The report claimed, “The headcount at Wistron’s operations in India was already close to 10,000. When workers rioted at its plant in December 2020, the company was forced to halt and restructure its systems and operations.”
The report states that Pegatron plans to hire 6,000-7,000 employees in India by the end of March 2022. “Pegatron India has not yet commenced operations as it only moved its production site to India earlier this year.”
The number of Apple suppliers operating in India increased to nine in 2020 from six in 2018. The growth of headcounts hired by Apple suppliers will accelerate with the number of suppliers shifting their supply chains in India.
To fulfill the dream of Make in India and the Indian government’s domestic manufacturing, Apple said in March that its flagship and eco-friendly iPhone 12 smartphone would soon be ready for local customers in India. Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE. Today, Apple manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones in India including the XR, iPhone 11 and now the iPhone 12. Apple’s suppliers in India are now using solar and wind power for their needs.
