Now Facebook-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has also announced end-to-end encrypted cloud backup of chats. This means that now the chats backed up on the cloud will also be completely secure i.e. end to end encrypted.
The backup of WhatsApp chats is usually saved on the users Apple and Google Drive, about which WhatsApp had earlier said that after the cloud backup is done, the responsibility of end-to-end encryption of the chat is not with it but the firm providing the cloud service. Now WhatsApp has partnered with Google and Apple for end-to-end encryption of chat backup.
Update for Android and iOS users
Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, while sharing a Facebook post, said that its update has been released on a rollout basis. Not only Android users but iOS users will also get the benefit of this facility. Also, the backup of chats will be safe even if you use third party cloud service.
How to use end-to-end encrypted backup
To use end-to-end encrypted backup in instant messaging app WhatsApp, users will first need to update their WhatsApp with the latest version. To create a backup, users will have to go to Settings, then Chats and then Chat Backup and then end-to-end encrypted backup, after which the chat can be encrypted.
