WhatsApp is a very popular app and there is hardly anyone who does not use it for day to day real-time communication. However, we have also heard about WhatsApp breaches which are very common. This forces us to think about the question of security. Despite all the security features, chats get leaked and can be extremely dangerous.
In the aftermath of the chat leak, thousands of users have shared privacy concerns of their personal chats and conversations on microblogging site Twitter and other social media channels. Some even say they are considering moving to a “secure” messaging platform like Signal or Telegram.
Understand end-to-end encryption
Before understanding whether WhatsApp chats can be leaked or not, we first need to know what end-to-end encryption really means and does it actually work in real life. In the last few months/years, especially after the introduction of the new privacy policy, WhatsApp has emphasized that all the chats on the platform are also un-readable by the original company Facebook. This is where end-to-end encryption comes in handy.
In simple words, end-to-end encryption means that no one can read WhatsApp messages other than the sender or receiver of the message. For example, if you’re chatting with your friend, no one else can read those messages except you. In fact, not just chats, the instant messaging platform claimed that all video and voice calls being made on the app are also end-to-end encrypted.
WhatsApp has said that no third party will be able to view anyone’s WhatsApp chats, photos or videos, Facebook does not have access to this information and WhatsApp does not have access to it. Due to the end-to-end encryption policy, the chat can only be read by the sender and receiver.
Ultimately, all your information is stored on your phone or cloud drive. When wrongdoing or criminal behavior is suspected, the same information can be made available to government officials on request. Also, if the chat is screenshotted, it can be leaked as it will not come under end-to-end encryption.
