Walmart partners with DroneUp to increase drone deliveries in the US

Walmart is trying to expand options for its drone delivery. The department store chain has decided to extend this facility to customers living in Farmington, Arkansas, US. Customers can order small items such as tuna caps, baby supplies and paper utensils within one mile of a Walmart store. Walmart has partnered with Virginia-based company DroneUp for drone-based delivery. Over the next few months, the company will also provide drone stations in Rogers and Bentonville in Arkansas.

A week ago Walmart partnered with Zipline. With this, it became the first commercial US drone delivery service within a 50-mile radius of Pia Ridge, Arkansas. The delivery drone will drop the package with a parachute to a select group of recipients from a Zipline plane.

Unlike Zipline, DroneUp will only be serviced within a mile of a Walmart store. A report in The Verge suggests that Walmart has only taken a small step with this move as the three stores where DroneUp will operate are already within Zipline’s service areas. A cable will be used to drop the packages down.

Walmart has tried to incorporate many items into its drone delivery service. In addition to edible essentials and baby food, Walmart will also deliver paper cups and plates, crayons, garbage bags, mixed fruit cups, vitamins, baby diapers and boxes of buttermilk pancake mix via drone, the report said.

Some limits have also been made regarding the weight while delivering the goods. There are weight restrictions when ordering items through the Drone Delivery Service for a delivery fee of $10 (approximately Rs 745). On the website, customers can check out for items weighing only 4 pounds (approximately 1.8 kg) in total. The heaviest item on the website was a 3.87-pound box of Similac Baby Formula. Despite the weight restrictions, Walmart’s website does not allow customers to sort items by weight.

Earlier, Walmart did some drone delivery tests with DroneUp. The drill was conducted within a one-mile radius in North Las Vegas and Cheektowaga, New York.
