You can never be completely careful about online transactions. Hackers are becoming more heavyweights in this. Even though developers are constantly bringing new ways to make sites and devices more secure, hackers still break them some or the other. As a result, just one password may not be enough to protect your important account from cybercriminals.
Recently, most businesses and services have added two-factor authentication as an optional feature for their online login. Some industries require two-factor-authentication as a security practice, and according to most internet security experts, adding two-factor-authentication is not only a good idea but an essential step to ensure your online security.
What is Two-Factor-Authentication?
Two-factor authentication, also known as 2FA or two-step verification, is a way to confirm your identity by asking you to undergo a security check. This is a way for a site or system to make sure that you are actually logged in and not a sophisticated robot or hacker.
After entering your password, you will be asked to pass another test, which will vary depending on the site you are using.
Hackers and robots have become more updated, so there are security challenges. Now there are five types of two-factor authentication. This includes text or voice based, hardware tokens, software tokens, sending information and biometrics authentication.
Some organizations, especially apps on your phone that deal with money, such as PayPal or whatever virtual banking app you can use, already use two-factor-authentication. If you have a phone that allows fingerprint or facial recognition, then these apps work with your software so that you can store your username and password on your device. Currently, the only problem with this technology is that not all devices have fingerprint scanners or facial recognition technology.
Why two-factor-authentication is important?
Two-factor-authentication has become an essential security measure as hackers and hacking systems become smarter over time. Hackers can easily use one unlocked account to unlock dozens of accounts.
These days, hackers have algorithm programs that test hundreds of common patterns and combinations in seconds. If your special user name or password has not already been guessed by these machines, then it is most likely. Once you guess a password, chances are they will be able to use that combo to hack into other common sites as well.
Obviously, the human mind cannot remember everything and the more we are comfortable online, the more we have to create and remember strong passwords to stay safe. Setting up two-factor authentication frees you from this burden. Now most websites, apps and devices already have 2FA capability which gives the option to set up with your account.
