Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp is one of the most used and loved applications and hence, chances of duping people through different unverified links and messages are always high on this platform. The new scam on WhatsApp is called “Friend in Need” scam, where users have complained about their friends receiving messages saying that they need help. Many users in the UK have received such messages.
In this scam, scammers posing as friends of WhatsApp users claim that they are stranded abroad and need financial help. According to a Metro report, recently a 53-year-old nurse was scammed after she received a message from a friend who claimed that her son was in trouble and needed help. The nurse sent the money without thinking and was duped of £2,500. These scammers know the weakness of the people and are deliberately targeting people who have a helping nature.”
Asking users to be careful, WhatsApp said in a statement, “If you receive any suspicious messages. Calling or requesting a voice note is the quickest and easiest way for someone to check who they are.”
How does the “Friend in Need” scam work?
Experts say that scammers can hack into the numbers of your friends/family. If the mobile phone of someone you know is lost, there is a possibility that their phone can be used to send such disturbing messages.
How can you protect yourself from such scams?
If you receive such a message from a friend or family member asking for money, instead of sending money immediately, call on the phone and check the source of the message. Also, pay special attention to the language used in such suspicious messages because typing errors are very high in such messages.
