Jeff Bezos And Wally Funk
The 82-year-old female pilot will go to space with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his brother. 82-year-old female pilot Mary Wallace Funk will be the oldest person to go into space. There’s an interesting thing about Funk’s space travel. She was about to go to space 60 years ago, she had also passed the necessary tests, but the only thing that hindered her journey in space was her gender. However, if all goes well, she will now share the spaceship with Jeff and his brother.
Bezos will make the first space flight on July 20 by his rocket company Blue Origin. Quoting from his Instagram, Bezos welcomed Mary Wallace Funk to space with her in the Battle of New Shepherd. He wrote, ‘No one has waited long. In 1961, Wally Funk was at the top of her class as part of the “Mercury 13″ Woman in Space program. Despite completing its test, the program was cancelled, and none of the thirteen took off. It’s time now, welcome to the crew. We are excited to fly with you on July 20 as your guest of honor.”
A seat costs $28 million
Earlier, Blue Origin, Bezos’s rocket company, had auctioned a seat for $28 million. The unnamed bidder who paid an exorbitant $28 million will fly New Shepard’s first manned flight to space on July 20, and will be joined by Blue Origin founder, Jeff Bezos, and his brother, Mark.
More than 7,600 people from 159 countries had registered to bid. The company had revealed that the bid money would be donated to Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future, whose mission is to inspire future generations to pursue careers in STEM and help invent the future of life in space.
Childhood dream: Bezos
Earlier, Bezos shared a video on his Instagram announcing the journey to space. He wrote, “Ever since I was five years old, I have dreamed of traveling to space. On July 20, I will do that journey with my brother. The biggest adventure with my best friend.”
Bezos will formally step down as CEO and co-founder of Amazon on July 5. He will now take over as the executive chairman of the company in the third quarter of this year. Bezos will be replaced by Andy Jesse, the head of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud division.
