Any meme instantly goes viral on social media. In such a situation, these two friends of Pakistan never thought that this picture of them will earn them 38 lakh rupees in the end.
Pakistan’s first meme
One of the most shared memes of Pakistan has now found a buyer. ‘Dosti over with Mudasir’ was Pakistan’s most viral meme and has now been auctioned as a non-fungible token for $51,530 (approximately Rs 38,273,13). NFTs are also becoming like cryptocurrencies, they are not interchangeable, but it is still a digital asset. NFT gives an individual exclusive rights to digital assets. However, this does not mean that the property cannot be copied, but the buyer has the rights to own it.
The friendship breakup meme from Pakistan was originally a photoshopped graphic in 2015 by Asif Raza Rana, a man from Gujranwala. Rana had announced his friendship break-up with Mudassir Ismail Ahmed over Ahmed’s perceived selfishness, pride and attitude. Not only did she announce her break-up with Ahmed, Rana also announced that she has found a new best friend in Salman Ahmed Naqsh. He shared the photo and wrote, “Now Salman is my best friend.” Soon after this, this photo started going viral very fast on the internet and people changed it in the form of meme.
Pakistan’s first MEME
It’s been six years since the public breakup between two best friends Rana and Ahmed, but Rana’s post was not forgotten on the internet. This famous meme has now been auctioned as NFT by Lahore and London-based startup Alter on Digital Marketplace Foundation for $51,530. Alter will take a small portion of the earnings while a larger portion will go to Rana, the original creator of the meme. This was the first meme in Pakistan to be sold as NFT.
“I never knew this post would become so viral and it would spread all over the world,” Rana told The Vice. “Many news agencies interviewed us. We have even made a cartoon about ourselves. People of Poland like it very much. I received Polish visa offers from two or three people. They even wrote my name on the walls there.”
Interestingly, after the post went viral, Rana and Ahmed extended their friendship to each other. After his patch-up, Rana posted another picture on Facebook and wrote, “Friendship with Mudasir reunited. Now both Mudasir and Salman are my best friends.” Rana and Ahmed were clearly close, but due to trust issues and perceived selfishness, the two parted ways. All is well that ends well. Rana not only got this friend back but also got money from auctions.
