The DoT circular said, “The licensee shall maintain all commercial records/call detail records/exchange detail records/IP detail records as well as records of communications over the network. These records shall be kept with the licensor for a minimum period of two years.” For security reasons, archives will be kept for investigation.
According to the circular, after two years, if no direction is received from the DoT, the telecom company can delete or destroy the stored data. It has also been said in the circular that this amendment is necessary for the good of the general public or for the security of the state or for the good working of telegraph.
This amendment also directs the telecom companies to maintain records of the internet data of the subscribers including login and logout information of the users. Also, calls made from mobile applications like e-mail, internet, telephonic service or calls made from Wi-Fi should also be archived for at least two years. Earlier this record was kept with the telecom companies for 1 year.
