Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnav said earlier this month that TRAI has said it will submit its suggestions for auctioning 5G spectrum by March. The Department of Telecom (DoT) is also preparing other procedures for conducting the auction soon. Telecom secretary K Rajaraman said, “TRAI has indicated that it will send the suggestion by March. After that it will take a month to decide on it.” Earlier, the government had started bidding in 60-120 days after getting suggestions from TRAI on auction of spectrum.
Rajaraman said it would take two months for DoT to start the auction after getting suggestions from TRAI. According to DoT, 5G can increase download speed up to 10 times. DoT seeks suggestions from TRAI on the price of spectrum, ways to allocate it, block size of spectrum, terms and conditions of payment. TRAI submits suggestions to DoT after consultation with industry and other stakeholders in this regard. These suggestions are decided by the Digital Communications Commission, the apex decision making body of the DoT. After this it is sent to the cabinet for final approval.
DoT has selected MSTC to conduct the auction of 5G spectrum. TRAI has given time till February 15 to submit additional comments to those participating in the auction of 5G spectrum. After this, TRAI will review it and suggest it. Telecom services related to 5G have already started in countries like America and South Korea. The auction of this spectrum in India has been delayed due to some difficulties. Telecom companies may have to spend a lot to buy 5G spectrum. Apart from this, these companies will also have to invest on the infrastructure related to it.
