Sound travels on Earth at a speed of 343 meters per second. In some studies, it has been found that in more dense medium such as water, they can move at the rate of 1480 meters per second. Hence they accelerate in more dense medium and slow down in less dense medium. The atmosphere of Mars is up to 100 times thinner than that of Earth. It is composed mostly of carbon dioxide.
NASA has released a sample of the sound collected on Mars. You can listen to it here-
This study shows that different types of sound behave differently on Mars. Low-pitch sound travels here at a rate of 240 meters per second and high-pitched sound at a rate of 250 meters per second. NASA scientists say that such a process has never been experienced before. The scientists have published their discoveries in the journal Nature.
Study co-author Baptiste Chide said, “Mars is surrounded by silence because the pressure of its atmosphere is very low. But its pressure varies according to the seasons. This means that the coming autumn season on Mars is more Noise can be heard.”
The Perseverance rover and its associated Ingenuity helicopter were launched in July 2020 and landed on Mars in February next year. They are looking for signs of old life on this red planet.
