Sophos’ Threat Report, published last week, aims to provide an overview of the security threats and trends that organizations may face in 2022. This report also tells about the threats faced in 2021, as well as talks about such flaws, which can be broken in the future. This study talks about a mobile malware family known as Flubot. It is one of the major banking Trojans affecting the Android platform.
This malware displays fake bank and cryptocurrency app login screens to steal users’ passwords. It not only steals the bank details of the users, it also breaks into the contact list of the users. After obtaining the contacts list, this malware sends spam messages to the friends and associates of the users, thereby further spreading the flubot infection.
This malware is mainly spread through SMS and mimics international parcel shipment services like DHL, FedEx and UPS. The victim receives an SMS alert with a URL link and sometimes an SMS with a web link that pretends to be a voice mail.
Sophos also warned that automated botnet attacks such as Mirai have also become increasingly popular over the past few years and have become a major means of sending crypto-mining malware. These malware infect various corporate assets such as servers and IoT devices. Cybercriminals can then use the processing power of these infected devices to mine cryptocurrencies.
In the report, Sophos believes that illegal use of cryptocurrencies for evasion of sanctions and criminal activities will continue to increase in 2022 as well. Ransomware and crypto-jacking are two of the main ways criminals can receive cryptocurrency payments directly from victims.
