Nokia was such a powerful company that was known for its products hardware and battery life. During that time only one phone was discussed everywhere and that was Nokia. Users were so much satisfied with this phone that it started ringing all over the world. The company launched its first internet enabled phone in the year 1996 and then after that the company also brought touch screen mobile prototype.
This was the beginning of a revolution in the mobile phone industry. The Finnish giant was the largest cell phone manufacturer in 1998. Nokia overtook Motorola. This was a move that was difficult to predict. But if all was going well then what happened that Nokia started slipping out of hand like sand? There was not only one reason here, there were many such reasons due to which the company could never make a comeback and went behind in the smartphone world. Nokia failed to take advantage of the Android bandwagon. While mobile phone makers were busy working on and improving their smartphones, Nokia remained stubborn. Samsung soon launched its range of Android-based phones which were quite affordable and user-friendly. Nokia’s management was under the impression that people would not accept touch screen phones and would continue with the QWERTY keypad layout.
This misconception was the beginning of his downfall. Nokia never considered Android as an advancement nor wanted to adopt the Android operating system. After understanding the market trends, Nokia introduced its Symbian operating system. However, it was too late when Apple and Samsung had consolidated their position. It was difficult to make any inroads to the Symbian operating system. This is the biggest reason behind the downfall of Nokia.

Another reason for Nokia’s failure was the deal with Microsoft at the wrong time. The company sold itself to Microsoft at a time when the software giant was full of losses. During this time, Nokia could not achieve anything from its sales and during that time Apple and Samsung were constantly bringing innovation and technical development in their products. It had taken a long time for Nokia to increase its speed in the market and the market had also changed completely. The acquisition of Nokia by Microsoft is considered to be one of the biggest blunders and it did not help either side.
Company completely failed in marketing strategy
Usually, a startup fails due to poor marketing strategy and the same has happened with Nokia. The company followed the failed strategy of umbrella branding. Apple was the first company to implement the umbrella branding model with the iPhone at the top. Nokia continued to do this year after year and in the meantime Samsung completely brought down Nokia by launching the Galaxy series.
Over the years the user confidence created by Nokia was slowly eroding. The company was inefficient in its sales and distribution methods. Considering this mess, Nokia decided to come up with some exciting hardware and software innovations. However, these were already released by rivals of Nokia. Failure in Nokia’s marketing and distribution strategies was instrumental in its exit from the mobile industry.
Couldn’t catch up with the industry
Nokia has never been able to keep pace with the changing technology and trends. Nokia was always famous for its hardware and did not pay much attention to its software line-up. In such a situation, the company could never change the technology of its phone. During that time the company needed to turn the business around but by the time Nokia realized this it was too late. Instead of being one of the first initiators, Nokia showed the momentum then but by then every major brand had launched some of the best phones in the market.
Brand value ignored
Nokia underestimated its brand value. The company believed that even after the late launch of its smartphone, people would flock to store and buy phones manufactured by Nokia. People still think that Nokia will do something amazing and by making changes in its software, the company will rule the market once again. However, this is far from the truth as it is seen today. The company got stuck with its software system which has been exposed to many bugs. Nokia felt that its past glory would help ease any trouble. Unfortunately, things didn’t go that way.
Lack of innovation in products
Nokia never introduced new technology in its product. While Samsung and Apple were constantly trying to do something new, while Nokia made all the big mistakes during that time by launching its Windows phones. The Nokia Lumia series was a leap-start solution, but that too collapsed due to lack of innovation. The company’s extremely slow phone and bad features further ruined it. In the 4G era, Nokia did not even have a 3G phone. Nokia also came up with the Asha series but by then the game was over.
Bad decisions and risk aversion led to the downfall of the mobile giant. Nokia avoided adopting the latest technology. Nokia’s failure turned out to be a case study that taught many companies different lessons. Nokia, once called a giant mobile company, had lost everything by the year 2013. There was a severe lack of leadership and guidance at Nokia.
