Facebook has changed its name to Meta.
A photo app on Facebook has been accused of allegedly copying its features for Instagram. An Instagram competitor has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Meta (formerly known as Facebook) for cloning its feature and sabotaging the competition. This is not the first antitrust case against Facebook. The social media company has been accused of suppressing competition many times in the past.
The Phhhoto app allowed users to capture five frames in a single point-and-shoot burst, create and share short GIF-like videos. We know about this feature because it is very similar to Instagram’s very famous Boomerang feature. It is one of the most used features now but it is definitely not the brainchild of Facebook. Phhhoto has alleged that Facebook copied its feature for Instagram and presented it to users as a “boomerang”. According to The Verge, the company alleged that Facebook blocked Phhhoto from Instagram’s API.
Phhoto said this in his complaint
“The actions of Facebook and Instagram destroyed Phhoto as a viable business and ruined the company’s investment prospects,” Phhoto said in the complaint filed in US District Court on Thursday. Phhhoto failed as a result of this anti-Facebook attitude. But Facebook’s attitude prevented Phhhoto from developing into a social networking giant.”
Phhhoto app was launched in 2014
Phhhoto app was launched in 2014 but it did not survive in the market for long. The app was shut down in 2017. The app claimed that it had 3.7 million monthly active users in the initial days. The app had users including Beyoncé, Joe Jonas, Chrissy Teigen and Bella Hadid. The report said that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, former Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom downloaded the app and checked its features.
Phhoto is now demanding compensation for the loss of money from Meta. However, Meta spokesperson told The Verge that the lawsuit filed by Phhoto is without merit and the company will defend itself in court.
