In its Annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report, Nokia has said that the average mobile data consumption in India reached 17GB per user per month in 2021. This represents a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 26.6 per cent. The 12-page report states that in the year 2021, 40 million new users joined 4G services and the base of 4G data subscribers in the country has reached 742 million. This increase in 4G data consumption coincides with the increase in the number of 4G devices in the country.
Nokia has said that India shipped more than 160 million smartphones in 2021, which is a record. Of this, 80 per cent shipments were from 4G devices. The report states that there are 649 million unique devices in the country with 4G connectivity. Of these, 93.1 percent have VoLTE support.
In addition to 4G devices, 5G phones also saw shipments of 30 million last year. This is also a record. The report states that the number of active 5G enabled devices in the country has crossed 10 million shipments.
The report estimates that the 5G subscriber base in India will reach 369 million in 2026. Revenue is also expected to increase by 164 percent in the next five years due to 5G services.
Talking about content, 40 percent of smartphone users in the country spent time in the short video segment. It is expected that by the year 2025 this will increase to 60-75 percent. The report states that India’s Gen Z means youth are online for an average of eight hours a day. Users have spent 40 percent of their time on regional videos. Nokia has said that 90 percent of Internet users in the country prefer to watch, listen, read content in their local language.
