Now companies will have to preserve all call records for at least two years instead of one year. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has amended the Unified License Agreement regarding this. Decision taken due to time taken in investigation
The decision to preserve these records for a long time has been taken due to the time taken in the investigation. A senior official of the Department of Telecom said that this is a procedural order. Many security agencies had urged that they need the data even after a year as investigation in most cases takes more than a year. In such a situation, it was decided to extend the mandatory period of keeping all the records safe. The senior official said that discussions were held with all the service providers regarding this and they all agreed to keep the data safe for an additional year.

There will be no additional burden on companies
According to the Indian Express, senior executives of telecom and internet service providers say that earlier there was a rule to keep data for at least 12 months, but usually it was kept for 18 months. An executive of a telecom service provider said that whenever this information is destroyed, the authorities are first informed of the period for which the data is to be destroyed and if there is a request to protect any data through legal means. If received, it is retained and the remaining data is destroyed within the next 45 days.
Another telecom company executive said that keeping one year of additional data will not add much cost as it takes up very little space if it is kept in the form of text. He told that in this data, information is stored about who called whom and for how long.
