According to Reuters, Sa has written to the Federal Communications Commission that this is likely to increase congestion cases and impact NASA’s science and human spaceflight missions. According to NASA, there are a total of 25,000 objects in orbit at present. And below 600 kms there are about 6100 objects. The expansion of the second generation satellite by SpaceX will double the number of objects in orbit and more than five times the number of objects below 600 km.
Harvard-Smithsonian astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, who is part of the American Astronomical Society panel, has said that we are concerned about having such a large number of satellites. It obstructs astronomical observations. We need a little more time before we can operate thousands of satellites.
SpaceX did not immediately respond to a comment sought on the matter. Elon Musk tweeted on January 15 that 1469 Starlink satellites of SpaceX are active. Soon 272 satellites will go into orbit.
Like SpaceX, Amazon has promised to spend $10 billion (about Rs 74,290 crore) to build 3,236 such satellites through its Project Kuiper. He also expressed concerns about SpaceX’s plan. Amazon warned that this overlap would increase the risk to the Kuiper system. Amazon has requested to apply fair conditions in this matter.
