Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced during the Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday that JioPhone Next, a smartphone jointly developed by Reliance Jio and Google, will be available in the Indian market from September 10, 2021. That the JioPhone Next will be a full-featured smartphone, which will be the most affordable in the market, but the price was not disclosed here. Some of the features of the phone include voice assistant, automatic read-aloud of screen text, language translation and smart camera with augmented reality filter.
Speaking about the Google-Jio partnership, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said: “JioPhone Next is powered by an optimized version of the Android OS jointly developed by Jio and Google. It is ultra-affordable and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Pichai said that Google’s vision with Jio’s partnership was to bring affordable access to information for Indians.
Jio- Google Cloud will connect every Indian with the Internet faster
The next step starts with a new, affordable, Jio smartphone made with Google. It is built for India and will open up new possibilities for millions of new users who will be experiencing the internet for the first time.” Pichai also told about the partnership between the two companies on 5G network technology. “A new 5G partnership between Google Cloud and Jio will help more than a billion Indians connect to faster internet, support businesses in the digital transformation and lay the foundation for India’s next phase of digitization,” he said.
Live is shadowed in the market
Launched in 2016, Reliance Jio soon captured India’s telecom market with its cheap data plans, which are often considered the cheapest in the world. Today, Jio is the largest data carrier in India with 422 million subscribers. Google invested $4.5 billion in Jio’s parent Jio Platforms last year, a move that landed the US tech giant a board seat with rival Facebook, which invested $5.7 billion in digital units.
Ambani has previously said that Jio, which also counts Qualcomm Inc and Intel Corp among its backers, will be the “leader of the 5G revolution” in India in 2021. The launch of the affordable smartphone will be a major step in the company’s ambitious plans to help the current market share. 2G and 3G users migrate to the popular 4G mobile network, and in future, become users of Jio’s 5G offering.
During the AGM, Ambani also talked about his company’s fixed broadband operator JioFiber. “With a cumulative base of 3 million active home and business users, JioFiber has become the largest and fastest growing fixed broadband operator in India,” Ambani said.
