TRAI has released the subscriber data for August 2021, which shows that Jio gained the most wireless subscribers in August and Vodafone Idea lost the most subscribers. In August 2021, Jio added the highest number of subscribers, which was more than 6 lakh 49 thousand subscribers. After Jio, Airtel was the only wireless telecom company to add customers but there was a big difference as the telco added 1 lakh 38 thousand customers. Vodafone Idea lost the highest number of customers which was more than 8 lakhs.
Government telcos BSNL and MTNL have lost more than 60,000 and 5 thousand customers respectively. As per the data, there was no significant increase in the number of total wireless customers as it increased to 1186.72 million in August as compared to 1186.84 million in July. The report estimates that the recent tariff hike by telecom companies has led to a huge increase in customers.
Jio’s largest share in the market
As of 31 August 2021, TRAI noted that private access service providers had 90.09 percent market share of wireless customers, while BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had only 9.91 percent market share. Jio had the highest market share of 37.40 percent, followed by Airtel’s 29.85 percent, Vodafone Idea’s 22.84 percent, BSNL 9.63 percent and BSNL and MTNL 10 percent.
BSNL and MTNL performed relatively well in terms of market share of wireline customers. As on 31 August 2021, PSU service providers held 46.91 per cent of the wireline market share.
How many customers do Voda-Idea and BSNL have?
TRAI data showed that Airtel has the maximum ratio of active wireless customers to its total wireless customers in August 2021 and MTNL has the minimum ratio of active wireless customers to 18.55 percent during the same period. The top five service providers constituted 98.75 percent market share of the total broadband customers at the end of August 2021. Service provider Reliance Jio had 447.57 million customers, Airtel had 205.96 million customers, Vodafone Idea had 123.53 million, BSNL 24.28 million and Atria Convergence 1.95 million.
The total number of broadband users was further divided into wired and wireless broadband. The top five wired broadband service providers were BSNL with 5.49 million customers, Reliance Jio with 3.71 million, Airtel with 3.69 million, Atria Convergence Technologies or ACT with 1.95 million customers and Hathway Cable and Datacom with 1.08 million customers. The top five wireless broadband service providers were Reliance Jio with 443.86 million customers, Airtel with 202.27 million customers, Vodafone Idea with 123.52 million customers, BSNL with 18.19 million customers.
