Sources said the officials have checked the financial documents and records of the company. These include transactions related to the company’s business in India and abroad. However, Huawei said that its business in the country is fully compliant with the law. The company said in a statement, “We have been informed about the arrival of the Income Tax team. Our business in India is compliant with all laws and regulations. We will contact the relevant government departments for further details and Full cooperation will be given as per the rules.”
The central government has kept Huawei out of the 5G services trial. However, telcos are allowed to buy telecom equipment from Huawei and ZTE under old agreements to maintain their networks. Telecom companies will have to seek approval from the government to enter into any new business agreements with these Chinese equipment companies under the National Security Directive on the telecommunications sector. Last year, the tax department conducted raids against Chinese handset companies like Xiaomi and Oppo and people associated with them. The department had claimed to have detected illegal income of more than Rs 6,500 crore in violation of the country’s tax laws and regulations.
Earlier this week, the Ministry of Information and Technology banned 54 apps related to China. The ministry said that these apps have been banned due to apprehensions about security and privacy. After tensions on the border with China about two years ago, the central government has banned many Chinese apps. Due to this the companies associated with these apps had suffered. These included apps like Tiktok and PUBG. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also conducted raids against Chinese companies giving instant loans through mobile apps and seized their assets.
