5G test
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved trial trials of select giants including Reliance, Airtel and MTNL to start 5G testing in the country. According to sources, the department has allocated spectrum to telecom operators for this.
According to a Business Standard report, according to a source related to the telecom sector, tests will be conducted at various places including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Gujarat, Hyderabad. In this regard, a telecom company official said, “Telecom operators have been allocated spectrum at various locations in the 700 MHz band, 3.3-3.6 GHz (GHz) band and 24.25-28.5 GHz band.”
DoT had approved the applications of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and MTNL on 4 May. The department has asked them to conduct 5G tests without using the techniques of Chinese companies. The DoT had approved the trial of 5G with Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-Dot. Apart from this, Reliance Jio Infocomm will be testing using its indigenous technology.
According to DoT, customers will get ten times better download speed and three times more spectrum efficiency through 5G technology as compared to 4G. 5G will be tested in the Indian setting during the test. Tele-medicine, tele-education and drone-based agricultural monitoring etc. will be included in this. Through this, telecom operators will be able to easily test various 5G devices on their network.
Currently the duration of testing will be 6 months. Out of which there will be 2 months time for the purchase and installation of equipment. According to the Department of Telecommunications, each operator will have to test in rural and semi-urban settings in addition to urban settings, so that the benefits of 5G technology spread across the country. These should not be limited to urban areas only. However, another industry source claims that no telecom operator has been allocated spectrum in Punjab, Haryana and Union Territory of Chandigarh.
