The National Informatics Center (NIC) has launched an instant messaging platform ‘Sandesh’ (Sandes), similar to whatsapp (WhatsApp). Like WhatsApp, messaging can be done with anyone through a mobile number or email ID. The Central Government has launched this app under the purpose of Swadeshi App. Earlier it was started for all government employees only, but now it has been started for all people.
The interface of the message is similar to other instant messaging apps. Chat history cannot be transferred between two platforms but all chats can be backed up on email. To use it, users can create their account on the message through a valid mobile number or email ID. On this, you can form groups like WhatsApp. You can broadcast messages, forward messages and send emojis.
Sandes started due to safety and privacy
Last year in 2020, due to corona epidemic in 2020, the central government imposed a lockdown across the country to prevent corona infection. Due to the lockdown, most workers had to work from home (work from home). In such a situation, there was a need to create a secure platform for communication among the workers.
Due to the security issues, in April 2020, the Union Home Ministry had given advisory to all government employees. Under this, government employees were prohibited from using platforms such as Zoom for official communication. The ministry had issued this advisory by the Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In) on the basis of the Zoom Against Advisory on concerns related to safety and privacy.
First version introduced in August 2020
According to officials, work on the Secure Communication Network for government personnel has been going on for the last four years. However, in the last year 2020, work on it increased rapidly. In August 2020, NIC introduced the first version of the Sandesh app, which all central and state level government employees could use for communication between their organization and other organizations. This app was first launched for Android users and then for iOS users.
Confidential message sending facility
An additional security feature has been added to the message. In this, the user can mark a message as Confidential. This will let the users receiving the message know that the message received is not to be shared with anyone else. However, there is a limitation of this app that users can not change their mobile number or email ID. To change the number or email ID, the user has to register himself as a new user.
