Google, in its first monthly transparency report, said it received more than 27,700 complaints from individual users in India in April this year related to alleged violations of local laws or personal rights, leading to the removal of 59,350 content. Google released its monthly observation report under the new IT rules that came into force from May 26.
Under the new IT rules, large digital platforms with more than 50 lakh users will have to publish their observation reports every month, detailing the complaints received and the action taken on them. The report also details several communication links or information that Google has removed or disabled access to with the help of automatic devices.
A Google spokesperson told PTI that the company has a long history of transparency with respect to various requests it receives from around the world. “All these requests have been examined and incorporated in our current transparency report since 2010,” the spokesperson said on Wednesday. This is the first time we (India) will publish a Monthly Transparency Report as per the new IT regulations, we will continue to publish more details as we improve our reporting process for India.
The report also said that considering the data variants and the time taken for verification, the figures will come after two months.
Google on Tuesday said it has continuously invested in product innovation, resources and staff in its efforts to protect users while complying with local laws in India. Google said this after speaking on the misuse of social media before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology.
According to sources, the company officials have been asked to comply with the new IT rules, government directives and court orders. The delegates were also informed that there are loopholes in their existing data protection and privacy policy system. Companies were asked to take strict measures for the privacy and data security of their users’ data.
