In a statement to Gadgets 360, a Google spokesperson said that the timeline has been extended in view of the Digital Payments Guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The spokesperson said that we had announced a timeline of March 31, 2022 for integrating developers with Play’s billing system in India. We are now extending this timeline to 31 October 2022 to provide developers with the necessary product support for payments through convenient user payment systems including UPI and Wallet.
Google had planned to roll out its billing system for developers in September this year. Responding to criticism from the company for charging commission, Google had said that the service fee is applicable only to developers who sell digital content through Google Play. It is claimed that the base of such developers is less than three percent of the total developers available on the platform.
However, even after this, criticism of Google continued among developers and legal action was also taken against the company in some major markets. In India too, in November last year, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had ordered an inquiry against the company. After all the actions, Google reduced the Play store commission.
In October, Google decided to reduce service fees for all app subscriptions from 30 percent to 15 percent. In this way, the company has further updated its Play Store commission model, which will be applicable from January 2022.
