Rosa’s education in the field of art started from childhood. His father was a painter. Finding a career in art was a new thing for Rosa, as the presence of women in this field was negligible. Rosa spent many years grooming herself and reinventing herself in sketches before putting her art on canvas.
Rosa Bonheur’s stature as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s. Many specimens of his art were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon from 1841 to 1853. Scholars believe that her paintings, which were included in an exhibition in 1849, established Rosa as a professional artist. In 1853, Rosa made worldwide recognition with her painting ‘The Horse Fair’. The painting depicted the Paris horse market. This painting is still on display today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
To honor this famous painting, the French Queen Eugenie awarded Rosa Bonheur, one of the country’s most prestigious awards, the ‘Legion of Honour’ in 1865. One of his paintings ‘Monarchs of the Forest’ was sold for over $200,000 at an auction in 2008.
