This security glitch affects Chrome users on Linux, macOS as well as Windows.
This bug in Google Chrome’s security affects Chrome users on Linux, macOS as well as Windows. Such security flaws are far more dangerous than regular security bugs.
Google has confirmed a serious security threat with Chrome and warned users to update their web browser to the latest version. The security flaw has been marked as mandatory because hackers started taking advantage of it before Google rolled out the fix.
Google has acknowledged this flaw in a new blog post and has brought a Chrome update to fix it. The blog mentions that this security bug affects Chrome users on Linux, macOS as well as Windows. As a safeguard against this vulnerability, Google is now rolling out Chrome 94.0.4606.61 Stable Channel for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It was targeted by hackers before Google discovered and fixed it via updates.
These types of security vulnerabilities are far more dangerous than regular security bugs because hackers tend to dominate security researchers and they may have already taken advantage of it extensively.
Google has not yet revealed any more details about the security flaw so that hackers can’t take much advantage of it. More details will be revealed when Google realizes that most of its Chrome users have upgraded to the latest version and this error may not affect users any more.
This is how hackers can take advantage of security flaws
In its blog, Google has mentioned this as a use-after-free (UAF) flaw. Such security vulnerabilities arise from incorrect use of dynamic memory during program operation. A note from Kaspersky states that after freeing a memory location, if a program does not clear the pointer to that memory, an attacker can use errors to hack the program.
Are you safe or not? check like this
Google warns that all Chrome users should update their Chrome browser to apply the new security update. Users can navigate to Settings > Help > About Google Chrome to check their latest version of Chrome. If Chrome version is 94.0.4606.61 or above, you are not at risk. A version below this means that the browser has yet to be updated to implement the fix. In such a situation, users are advised to keep checking for updates till it is not available on their browser. Once this is done, install the update and restart Chrome to activate the security update.
