Satya Nadella is credited with bringing new energy to Microsoft. He has been unanimously elected to head the Microsoft Board of Directors.
Satya Nadella
Microsoft Corporation on Wednesday named Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella as its new president, replacing John Thompson. Nadella, who took over as CEO after Steve Ballmer in 2014, has been instrumental in growing his business, including through billion-dollar acquisitions such as LinkedIn, Nuance Communications and ZeniMax.
The company said Thompson, who took over as chairman from software giant’s co-founder Bill Gates in 2014, will serve as lead independent director. He has played this role in the past from 2012 to 2014 as well. The executive change at the company’s top level comes just a year after Bill Gates stepped down from the board, saying he would focus on the philanthropic work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world’s largest charity organizations. .
Why did Microsoft choose Nadella?
Satya Nadella has rejuvenated him for a new era while tightening his grip on a leading American tech company. Nadella was unanimously elected to head the Microsoft board of directors, the company said in a post, where he will guide the agenda “while leveraging his deep understanding of the business to spot the right strategic opportunities and identify key risks.” .
Nadella, who took over from Steve Ballmer in February 2014, has made Microsoft more relatable to a new technology world led by mobile-focused competitors such as Apple and Google. Nadella is credited with bringing new energy to the company, which was founded in 1975 and has long focused on packaged software for personal computers.
Cloud computing given priority
Early in his tenure, Nadella ordered a massive restructuring, cutting 18,000 jobs, or 14 percent of the workforce, as part of a plan aimed at simplifying corporate structure and integrating Finland’s mobile division of Nokia. Nadella, 53, preferred cloud computing, which has become a lucrative development engine at the tech giant based in the city of Redmond, Washington state.
Microsoft is about to launch a new generation of its Windows operating system next week. Oversight of Nadella, Microsoft has focused more on leasing datacenter-hosted software and services in the computing cloud and growing its user platform.
