Nowadays telecom companies all over the world are working on 5G technology. But now this technology seems to be in danger. A recent report has revealed that a Chinese hacking group is targeting telecom companies around the world for allegedly stealing 5G technology secrets as well as other sensitive information.
ZDNet said in its report on Tuesday that telecom companies are being targeted in Southeast Asia, Europe and America. This has been disclosed by researchers of cybersecurity company McAfee. It is believed that hackers are targeting at least 23 telecom companies under this campaign. However, it is unclear how many of these targeted companies have been harmed by hacking.
The name of the hacker group Dianxun is being named behind this hacking. The tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) used in the attack seem to be similar to those of earlier campaigns, and the Threat actors (masters of hacking) have been publicly blamed for Reddelta and Mustang Panda.
McAfee said in a blog post that this threat is probably targeting people working in the telecommunications industry and has been used to access sensitive data for espionage purposes and to spy on companies related to 5G technology.
However the reason for this attack is not completely clear. The McAfee Cybercity team believes that the victims were lured to a domain controlled by the Threat Actors, from where they were infected with malware, which the Threat Actors took advantage of for additional search and data collection.
Regional solutions architect Andrea Rossini at McAfee said in a statement, “We believe that the attackers used a phishing website as a company carrier page.” However, according to the researchers, Huwaye himself is not involved in this.
