Facebook has changed its name to Meta.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that his company will now be known as Meta or Meta Platform. The new platform brings apps and technology together under a new company brand. But don’t worry, this won’t change anything for you if you are a Facebook user. The same is true for Instagram users and WhatsApp users. The websites and apps they use will retain their old names.
Announcing the new name, Zuckerberg said, “Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that creates technology to connect people and Metaverse is the next limit like social media. When we started networking. Changing the name of Facebook raises many questions whether the social media app will change for the users or not. The answer is no. Even after Zuckerberg announced Meta, Facebook will remain the same for its users as it was before. There will be no change in the way the app is used. No new features and layouts have been announced and usage guidelines will remain the same.
Similarly, the name change will not affect other Facebook-owned apps including WhatsApp and Instagram. There will be no “meta” in them. Zuckerberg said, “Our apps and their brands are not changing either. We are still a company that designs technology around people.”
Why did Mark Zuckerberg change the name of Facebook?
Zuckerberg did not want Facebook to be known as just a social media company. Facebook now wants to be known as a technology company, which has a lot of products and apps. In his founder letter, Zuckerberg says that the new platform will be even more impressive, with users being able to do almost anything they can imagine. He said people can meet, work, learn, play, shop with friends and family on the meta platform.
Zuckerberg to include crypto and NFTs in his platform
Zuckerberg also revealed his plans to incorporate crypto and NFTs into his platform and ensure that users’ privacy and security are given the highest priority.
Zuckerberg said in his letter, “Privacy and security need to be developed in the metaverse from day one. This will require not only new technical work – such as supporting crypto and NFT projects in the community – but also new forms of governance. Above all, we need to help the ecosystem grow so that more people can participate in the future and benefit not only as customers but as makers.”
Well, only time will tell whether Zuckerberg is going to follow the talk or not. Currently, Facebook and its CEO don’t have much social capital to their name. There have been allegations that Facebook has put profit ahead of the social harm it potentially causes in society, and there are many whistleblowers who have come forward alleging flaws in the way Facebook works. Government regulators around the world are also looking at the way Facebook works and asking questions.
