SpaceX mainly helps NASA’s programs, as well as this company from time to time launches satellites for other companies, international customers and the US Department of Defense. Although 52 launches are planned this year, most of them will be done for SpaceX. It is believed that these launches will be for Starlink’s satellite. Starlink is also a part of SpaceX. It is working on bringing satellite internet to the world. The Starlink project would require SpaceX to launch thousands of small satellites into low-Earth orbit. SpaceX is regularly launching them in batches of 50-60 satellites.
SpaceX’s plan to launch 52 this year was revealed during a virtual meeting of NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel. A report in The Verge quoted panel member and former NASA astronaut Sandy Magnus as saying that SpaceX plans to launch 52 this year.
However, these launches largely depend on the weather and other factors. The launch is subject to change until the end of the day. So there is no guarantee of achieving this goal. For example, Elon Musk said that his company is aiming to launch 48 missions in the year 2021, but it could accomplish only 31 missions.
SpaceX setting an ambitious target is laudable, but such a packed schedule has several disadvantages. There is criticism for not completing them.
