Twitter said last week that the company is making every effort to comply with the new guidelines and the IT ministry is being informed of progress at each step of the process.
Twitter’s Interim Resident Grievance Officer for India has left the microblogging site without informing Twitter. The officer was appointed as the Grievance Officer a few days back. The source said that Dharmendra Chatur, who was recently appointed interim resident grievance officer for India by Twitter, has resigned from the post.
The social media company’s website is no longer displaying their name, as required under the Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules 2021. However, Twitter has not given any statement in this matter so far. This comes at a time when the micro-blogging platform is in conflict with the Indian government over new social media rules. The government has slammed Twitter for willful disobedience and failure to comply with the country’s new IT regulations.
The new rules, which came into effect from May 25, compel social media companies to set up a grievance redressal mechanism to address complaints of users or victims. All important social media companies with a user base of more than 50 lakhs will appoint a Grievance Officer to deal with such complaints and share the names and contact details of such officers.
Large social media companies are required to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Liaison Person and a Resident Grievance Officer. They should all be residents of India. Twitter, in response to the final notice issued by the government on June 5, said it intended to comply with the new IT regulations and would share the details of the chief compliance officer. Meanwhile, the microblogging platform had appointed Chatur as the interim Resident Grievance Officer for India.
Twitter now displays the company name along with the US address and email ID instead of India’s Grievance Officer. According to a government official, the company has lost legal protection as an intermediary and will be legally responsible for all content posted by its users on the platform.
