Actually, NASA is testing the most powerful rocket ever built for the Artemis mission. This rocket, named Space Launch System (SLS), will be in the Orion spacecraft. The system will be tested for the last time before the actual launch through a wet rehearsal. In this the rest of the rehearsals are done without launching the rocket. If all goes well, the system will go back to the VAB and wait for the actual launch.
According to NASA, it will not take the combined rocket and spacecraft out of the VAB for testing before March 2022. For the first time, NASA has taken extra time to complete the closeout activities in the VAB before rolling out the rocket.
Tom Whitmire, deputy associate administrator for Exploration Systems Development at NASA, said the team is taking time. This is the part where we’re getting things done and getting ready to launch.
The Artemis I mission was supposed to launch in November last year, but NASA said in October that it plans to launch Artemis I in February. Since then this launch has been rescheduled twice.
This mission is going to be special in many ways. The famous and touching character ‘Snoopy’ from the comic strip, ‘Peanuts’ will also be a part of this mission, that is, he will go to the Moon. Earlier in 1969 too, this anthropomorphic Beagle i.e. hunter was sent on a mission to the Moon and it became the world’s first Beagle to land on the surface of the Moon.
