Two big US companies – Apple and Epic Games, have jumped into a legal battle over the use of in-game payment systems. In this case, Apple’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Cook and Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney can testify during the upcoming hearing. According to the ‘TechCrunch’ report, this hearing is scheduled to begin on 3 May.
The proposed list of witnesses for Apple also includes Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering and Phil Schiller, Senior Officer of the App. At the same time, in addition to Sweeney, the company’s vice president Mark Rein has also been included in the proposed list of witnesses for the Epic Games.
Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite Games, alleges that Apple uses its control over the iOS ecosystem for its own benefit, while hindering its use for its competitors.
Significantly, the company violated the rules by adding in-game payment system in August last year. After this, the Fortnite game was removed from the App Store. The purpose of adding an in-game payment system was to deprive Apple of its commission on in-app purchases from the App Store.
The company said that when Epic gave Fortnite players a choice between Apple Pay and Epic Direct Payment on iOS, Apple blocked Fortnite updates in retaliation. When Epic tried to bring the Epic Games Store to iOS, Apple refused.
