Airtel sent such a bill to a person living in Bengaluru that his senses flew away. Airtel sent a bill of about 13 crores for four days for roaming the phone to Melvin John Thomas, who lives in Bengaluru, seeing that he got a heart attack. After this, he reached the court against Airtel.
In fact, Melvin was working on a manager’s post in a heavy equipment company in Bangalore and in 2016 he had to go to China in connection with work. He had an Airtel SIM under a corporate account. In October 2016, before going on a trip, he called Airtel for a short time to activate international roaming for voice calls. After this he got this facility but he claimed that he did not provide any information in the text about international roaming and data plans.
Bill sent over 12 lakhs
After this, he received a bill of Rs 12,14,566 from Airtel, which also included the bill for his travel time to China from October 29 to November 2, 2016. Melvin claimed that after receiving this bill through SMS, he had a heart attack and after recovering, he asked the representative of Airtel about its authenticity. After this, the service provider sent him a revised bill of Rs 12,18,732.
The company cited data usage
Melvin’s plan limit was only 9,100 rupees and after looking at this bill, he asked for information about how the bill for using data has come so high. He said that he was using Wifi completely during his trip to China. After talking several times, Airtel sent a revised bill of Rs 5,22,407 to Melvin.
Knocked at the door of the court for not resolving the case
On December 12, 2016, Melvin filed a complaint against Bharti Airtel Limited in Bengaluru’s first Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission after an attempt to resolve the issue failed. Subsequently, during the hearing, Melvin’s lawyer submitted his claim after which Airtel’s lawyers said in court that the case cannot be contested legally as the SIM used by the complainant is part of the corporate plan which was his Belongs to the employer. Along with this, he also said that Melvin had left his data plan in active mode, due to which he was billed for Rs 12,18,732 due to using more data, which was later revised to Rs 5,22,407. done. Apart from this, Airtel’s lawyer also said that this huge bill controversy was false and the story of the heart attack is also fictitious.
The court pronounced this decision
After this, the Consumer Forum asked Airtel a question regarding the uplift of Melvin, which was 9,100 rupees. Along with this, he also notices that according to the rule, Airtel should have given information to the customer after using up to 70 percent of the data. However, Airtel reduced the bill from Rs 12,18,732 to Rs 5,22,407, which is 60 percent less than the original bill. In such a way, how it is possible to reduce the bill in this way. After this, it has also been said in the court that this thick bill was made only to collect from the customer. The court also said that while some people question such excessive allegations and consumers knock on the doors of the court, many people can pay such a huge amount to avoid trouble.
In its judgment on 5 March 2021, the judges ordered Airtel not to collect Rs 5,22,407 or any amount in relation to the said bill. With this, the court ordered to collect the maximum monthly bill. With this, the court also ruled that Airtel will have to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation to the customer and Rs 5,000 for court expenses.
