Airtel is considering increasing the mobile tariff to get out of the increasing pressure in the telecom sector. Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal himself said this during a program.
Signs of increase in mobile tariff
In order to reduce the increasing pressure on the telecom industry and to stay in the market with the aim of launching 5G services, Airtel may increase its mobile tariff. This was indicated by Sunil Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Airtel himself. He said on Thursday that there is “tremendous tension” in the telecom sector, due to which there is a need to increase tariffs. In such a situation, Airtel will not hesitate to increase the prices. However, its decision will not be unilateral.
Mittal said, “It would not be correct to say that there is only a slight problem in the telecom industry. Because it’s really under a lot of stress. But I hope that the government, authorities and the Department of Telecom will all focus on this issue and ensure the solution of the problem. Also, make sure that India’s digital dream remains intact through at least all three operators.” He said these things in a program of satellite communication company OneWeb.
VIL is also suffering loss
The telecom czar’s remarks come at a time when Airtel’s rival Vodafone Idea has approached the government for a one-year moratorium on payment of spectrum installment of over Rs 8,200 crore in April 2022. It is known that Vodafone-Idea ie VIL is also facing this ongoing pressure in the telecom sector. Cash-strapped VIL has told the DoT that it has been working on raising fresh funding for the past six months, but investors are not ready to invest in the company.
Increasing pressure in the telecom sector
Mittal declined to comment on the VIL issue, but acknowledged that the telecom industry is under tremendous stress. In such a situation, there is a need to increase the telecom charges. Hence Airtel will not “hesitate” in this regard. Mittal said Bharti Airtel has raised funds timely and adequately through share capital and bonds, and added that the company stands firmly to serve the market in the years to come.
Need to stay in the market for 5G services
The telecom industry needs to stay healthy to roll out 5G services and fulfill India’s digital dream. For this, major telecom companies will have to try and persevere to face the challenges of the market. The government will also have to pay attention to this.
